.: The Party Rater :.

I have been thinking of a way for promoters in the New York City area who deliver entertainment for the Caribbean Diaspora; to aim for a higher caliber of amusement for the people….

I pondered for awhile and eventually figured that if people can rate movies; why de hell we can’t rate fetes? If someone who is an avid party-goer takes the time to critique a fete, and let people know “yuh miss a Bess fete!” or “is a good thing yuh stay in yuh bed!” which promoter wouldn’t want his fete to be at the top of the “Bess Fete” list?    EXACTLY!!!

So I came up with categories under which to rate a fete (scale of 1-5), with the basics that people look for every time they go out:

  1. The Guy Factor: Women want to know it has good-looking men, who dress nice, who smell good, who have a nice smile, who took the time to shave, out where they are socializing.
  2. The Girl Factor: Men want the same courtesy; they want gorgeous women in their vicinity, who took their time to get ready, saw the hairdresser sometime in the week and who carry themselves with a confidence that is still approachable.
  3. Music: We want music, that we don’t need alcohol to build the vibe. The kind of  music that takes you to a natural high that makes you close your eyes, rock your head and smile…
  4. Vibe& Ambience: The way the dance looks, is how you feel to behave. Hence, stronger vibes. If we in a basement, we feel to behave “sweaty”, if we in 40/40 Club we feel the need (men), to wipe your face a little more often with your rag; (ladies) to visit the washroom a little more to reapply the powder. Ah lie??
  5. Location& Parking: If we struggled for a park or we parked in a “shady” area, the vibe takes a longer time to build, when we finally get in the party. Everybody wants a convenient location; if not, then at least safe parking or a near by subway.
  6. Drinks: Very simple;Beers, we want them cold! Mixed drinks, we want to perfection! And don’t “chinks”, regardless of the price. FULL STOP!

After these categories are rated an average will be taken, for an overall rating to figure out how many JOTRs (pronounced “jotters”); the acronym for Johnny on the Rocks did the event receive:

1 JOTR- “YAWN; Ah shoulda stay home!”.

2 JOTRs- “Oh You left the party at two? Yea, I left at two-too!” (No pun intended).

3JOTRs- “It have potential man, it was aight!”

4 JOTRs- “Pure Nyceness and fun times man!”

5 JOTRs- “A Real Bess Fete; Horse, yuh shouldn’t ah stay home!”

Remember NYCV is always looking for the ultimate party experience; so this is not to create animosity or promote negativity, but to elevate the quality of Caribbean events in New York City. No hard feelings, just honest opinions people.
